The cove and your goal
At Shell Cove, each tide note is a small number puzzle. Your job is to follow the changes, not to tap as quickly as possible. A wave may bring shells in, carry them away, hide one delivery or leave two coves to compare. The illustrated group describes the current clue, so a departing group is a subtraction rather than a new pile to add. Read the question before choosing: some notes ask for the final total, others for an unknown arrival or the difference between two piles. Success means identifying the one number that satisfies that note’s rule.
How to play
- Choose Start Game, browse the Stage rail and select an unlocked note.
- Advance each wave and track arrivals, departures and the crab; mark visible shells to keep your place.
- Read the question and choose a number, or watch the same clues again before answering.
- At Result, continue to the next note, replay with new quantities or return to Stages.
Advance waves at your own pace, then answer. Watch again without resetting mistakes. Clear notes in order; earn three stars on a first correct answer, two after one mistake, or one after two. New tide changes the numbers for another attempt. Progress and best stars are saved locally when browser storage is available.
Progression and replay
The campaign contains thirty authored notes arranged in six five-note chapters. Early notes establish arrivals and departures; later chapters add several waves, a missing delivery, two-cove comparison, alternating two-step tides and a crab taking extra shells. Every fifth note marks a chapter checkpoint. These markers do not add a timer or a separate combat mode. Clear notes in order to unlock the next one; completed notes remain replayable. New tide changes quantities within the same mechanic, and both the position and numerical rank of the correct option can vary. A better result raises that note’s best stars without erasing stronger earlier results.
Practical tips
Keep arrivals, departures and crab removals separate as you observe each wave. A visible change is not automatically the final total. In missing-delivery notes, work backwards from the known ending: ending plus departures minus the initial pile. For comparison notes, match the two piles conceptually and count the unmatched shells; the answer is a non-negative difference. Tap individual visible shells to mark your place while counting. Marks are only visual aids, clear when the clue changes and never submit an answer or affect stars.
Design notes
The game stays untimed so observation and correction remain more important than reaction speed. Shell entrances, moving water, answer feedback and result stars make changes easier to notice, but animation completion never computes a score or changes a saved result. The clue remains readable after its entrance effect. Answer buttons retain their positions during mistakes, and a rejected option becomes unavailable rather than moving the remaining choices. The cove is a fictional puzzle setting, not a tide forecast or a simulation of real shell movement. There are no opponents, attacks, equipment or purchases to manage.
Controls, motion and saves
Use touch or a mouse to choose notes, advance waves, mark shells and answer. Tab with Enter or Space provides button access; number keys 1–3 choose the corresponding visible answer when answering is enabled. Settings pause decorative movement, and the system’s reduced-motion preference suppresses tween effects without changing puzzle rules. Completed notes and their best stars are stored only in this browser. If storage is blocked, progress lasts for the current page session; changing devices or clearing browser data does not restore it from an account.
Questions and answers
- Why can’t I answer immediately?
- Observation comes first. Advance through the note’s clues at your own pace, then use the answer action. During a short entrance effect, repeated input cannot skip several clues accidentally.
- Does watching again reset my mistakes?
- No. Watching again replays the same clues and keeps the same options and mistakes for that attempt. A first correct answer earns three stars; one wrong choice earns two, and two wrong choices earn one.
- What does the question mark hide?
- It hides the size of a delivery in a missing-value note. The initial pile, departures and ending are known. Neither a hidden shell count nor an accessibility label supplies the missing answer.
- What happens when I leave a note?
- Battle Back opens an in-game confirmation. Continue returns to the same attempt. Leaving discards that unfinished attempt but preserves already saved clears and best stars. Result offers Stages, Next note and New tide.
- Why is the middle number not always correct?
- The answer generator chooses two distinct alternatives and then shuffles the options. The correct value can be the smallest, middle or largest available number, so the arithmetic—not a position shortcut—determines the answer.
