Crazy Eights

Crazy Eights is a four-player shedding-card match. Play a card that matches the active suit or rank, use an Eight to choose the next suit, and empty your hand before the AI rivals do.

World and Mission

The table begins with you and three AI opponents, each holding a small hand while the stock and discard pile define the next decision. Every turn changes both the visible suit and the number of cards each rival is holding.

The goal is not to build a permanent collection or climb a campaign. Each fresh round is a compact reading exercise: identify the legal exits, preserve a flexible Eight, and finish before another hand reaches zero.

How the Systems Work

A card is legal when its rank or suit matches the top discard. Any Eight is wild; after playing it, choose the suit that becomes active for the next turn. The active suit can therefore differ from the Eight's printed suit.

The turn moves around the table after a legal play. When you have no legal card, Draw takes one card from the stock; a drawn legal card can be played immediately, while an unusable draw leaves the turn to the next player. If the stock is empty, the round continues with the available discard state.

The round ends when a player empties their hand. The Result surface identifies the winner and reports the round outcome, while New Game deals a fresh hand without changing the rules. Illegal taps stay inert and show a localized cue, so a mistaken card does not consume a turn.

How to Play

  1. Read the discard's rank and the active suit shown above the table, then select a matching card or any Eight from your hand.
  2. If no card is legal, use Draw once. If the drawn card is playable it enters the round immediately; otherwise wait for the next turn.
  3. When you play an Eight, choose the suit that gives your next turn the best route or leaves the AI with fewer useful matches.
  4. Keep checking every opponent's card count. Empty your hand to win, or use New Game after Result to start another deal.

Strategy Tips

  • Do not spend an Eight only because it is legal. Save it to escape a blocked suit, control the next active suit, or finish a difficult hand.
  • When several cards match, prefer the play that preserves a second suit or rank for your next turn rather than leaving one isolated card.
  • Watch the opponent with the smallest hand first. A strong match is less valuable if it gives that rival an easy finish.
  • Before choosing an Eight's suit, count your own matches and the suits the AI has recently avoided; choose a route that keeps your follow-up options visible.

Campaign and Difficulty Growth

There is no campaign ladder or artificial level gate. Replay value comes from fresh deals, changing discard sequences, the timing of Wild Eights, and the pressure created by three different AI hands.

A round moves directly from Main to Battle to Result. New Game resets the deal for another short match; the current browser can retain local preferences and round records, but there is no account or cloud campaign.

Developer Design Note

Crazy Eights makes one familiar rule legible at a glance: match the rank or suit, then treat an Eight as a controlled change of state. The browser version keeps illegal input harmless, exposes Draw and Wild feedback in the same Battle surface, and makes the Result-to-New-Game loop short enough for repeat play without inventing a progression system.

FAQ

How do I play a card?
Play a card matching the active suit or the top discard's rank. Any Eight is wild and can be played on any turn.
What happens after I play an Eight?
Choose one suit. That choice becomes active for the next turn, even though the card itself is an Eight.
What should I do when I have no legal card?
Use Draw once. A drawn legal card can be played immediately; an unusable draw passes the turn onward.
Can an illegal tap change the hand?
No. An illegal card stays in your hand and the localized feedback explains that a matching suit, rank, or Eight is required.
How does a round end?
The first player to empty their hand wins. Result reports the outcome, and New Game starts a fresh deal.
Is there a campaign or difficulty ladder?
No. Each round is a new deal against three AI opponents; the challenge changes through the cards and discard order.
Is progress saved?
Local preferences and round records may remain in this browser only. No account or cloud save is required.
